Superflea epidemic on cards thanks to wet summer and mild winter creating ideal breeding conditions

Homes throughout the UK could be invaded by an epidemic of superfleas because of recent weather conditions.

The warm winter followed by wet summer months have created ideal breeding conditions for the legions of large mites.

Some of them could even be immune to existing pest control treatments.

Fleas are now starting their breeding season and after getting into homes on cats and dogs can infest bedding, carpets and furniture.

A spokesman for pest controllers Basis Prompt told a national newspaper: "The activity and behaviour of fleas is often very much dependent on the climate.

"As they thrive in a warm and humid environment, they're likely to be present in greater numbers than usual during the next few weeks.

"The population of fleas seems to have grown rapidly in recent years, but the risk of an infestation could be bigger than ever this summer," DevonLive reports

Basis Prompt says superfleas can survive shop-bought powders.

The first you may know of a flea infestation is itchy red bites around your lower leg or feet. The bites have a reddened halo and should be washed with soap and water before antiseptic cream is applied.

Vigorous vacuum cleaning of all services and washing pet bedding at 60C can help get rid of fleas and eggs - alongside treatment from your vet.
