SuperCupNI Minor final: Glentoran boss Declan Lynch predicts big things for club's youngsters

Proud boss Declan Lynch has predicted big things for his young Glentoran stars following their SuperCupNI success.

The East Belfast club's to finish off the week in style.

Goals in either half from Jack McCosh and Jay Dalzell sealed a 2-0 victory at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

McCosh broke the deadlock at the end of the first half with a sensational goal, the midfielder sending a rocket of a shot into the net via the underside of the crossbar.

If that was good, Dalzell's goal was of similar quality.

He raced onto a through ball down the right channel, and as Dungannon keeper Harry Rainey advanced, Dalzell coolly lofted the ball over his head and into the far corner.

"It is great for the club, and for the boys," Lynch beamed.

"They deserve everything they got this week. On Monday, we lost our first game, but it turned into a blessing in disguise.

"The boys learnt from that and moved on, and they woke up. We tried to take the pressure off them as the week progressed.

"We gave them a few tips on defensive shape and things like that, but we trusted them to just go out and play.

"You have to trust them, and let them play with freedom, whilst also being aware of their defensive duties.

"We prepared well and it proved key today. The boys bought into everything we told them, and I am so proud of the boys.

"At the end of the day they put in the work."

It was a spirited display from the Glens who had to fend off a determined Dungannon side for long periods.

Dixie Robinson's team kept pressing for a lifeline but their misery was compounded when defender Kyle Watterson sent off for a last-ditch tackle on Jude Johnson midway through the second half.

" We were under pressure, but you expect that in finals," Lynch added.

"We soaked it up and when we got our chances we took them. That calmed the boys down.

"We had a few players struggling, but we told them they had to do it on the pitch and battle though it. We told them it was all in the head.

"And funny enough, one of those players was Jay Dalzell who scored a sublime second goal for us today.

"We are so glad he kept pushing and didn't want to come off."

Lynch hopes a number of his squad will one day progress through the Glentoran ranks to feature in the club's first team.

He also believes some of them are good enough to earn a shot across the water.

"It shows you the strength of the club, the talent coming through the youth," he added.

"And I believe there are players here who will star for the first team one day, and also some who will hopefully get a bigger opportunity across the water.

"They are very capable, so hopefully they can prove it.

"Glentoran is a fantastic club. Development at this level is key, and the results are a bonus. They will enjoy this win.

"This means everything to the club.

"It was our first time in a semi-final, and then the final. And now we have won it. It is fantastic."
