SuperCupNI debut boys Valencia come from behind to clinch Premier title

Spanish eyes were smiling at the STATSports SuperCupNI on Friday night as Valencia clinched the Premier title.

Second half goals from Pedro Aleman and Hugo Gonzalez saw the newcomers come from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

Newcastle looked on course for a first Premier triumph in 30 years when Dylan Stephenson slotted home a 29th-minute opener.

But Valencia responded in style in the second half to become the first Spanish side to win at the tournament since Barcelona in 2005.

Valencia's academy system boasts graduates including David Silva, Isco and Jordi Alba, and fans were hoping to see some future stars in this SuperCupNI final.

But despite their considerable reputation at the tournament, the Spanish side struggled to build any momentum during a frustrating first half.

Aleman's teasing free-kick evaded everyone in the eighth minute, while at the other end Lucas Gamblin could only head over from a corner.

Valencia were denied by the woodwork in the 27th minute.

Ferran Giner found space inside the box and drilled a low shot that cannoned off the outside of the post.

And their misery was compounded in the 29th minute when Newcastle took the lead.

A sweeping ball was played wide to Joe Oliver on the right, he delivered a first-time cross and Stephenson finished with aplomb.

Valencia came out with more purpose in the second half, but Gonzalez was off target one minute after the restart with a wild effort that was never threatening Oliver Marshall's goal.

They were almost level two minutes later, but Julio Insa's shot was well saved by Marshall after some good work from David Ruiz.

Valencia continued to press.

Ruiz escaped the Newcastle defence moments later and managed to squeeze the ball past keeper Marshall, but Lewis Brannen got back to hack away the loose ball.

It was a sign of things to come, and in the 42nd minute Valencia were level.

Giner raced through but had his shot saved, and the loose ball came out to Aleman who slotted home from 15 yards out.

It was a clinical finish, and there was more to come.

Valencia were in front eight minutes later with a superbly worked goal.

The dangerous Insa found room 30 yards out and threaded a through ball into the feet of Gonzalez, and he dispatched a low right-foot shot past Marshall and into the far corner of the net.

Newcastle tried to muster a response, with Elliot Anderson warming the hands of Valencia keeper Juanvi Munoz with a rasping drive in the 64th minute.

Substitute Josh Harrison was then crowded out in added time when in a decent crossing position.

Referee Ben McMaster soon blew his whistle for full-time, and the Valencia celebrations got underway.
