SuperCupNI 2022: Proud boss Michael McClean hails Co Antrim heroes after win over Leeds United

County Antrim's burgeoning reputation at the SuperCupNI was bolstered on Monday with a superb 3-1 win over Leeds United.

Michael McClean's side proved their class and character with another giant-killing performance at the youth tournament.

A double from Blaine McClure and another goal from Cole Brannigan did the damage at the Riada Centre in Ballymoney.

Proud boss McClean said: "It was a really gutsy display from the lads against a very good team. It might not have been our best performance but we are delighted with the result.

"We were 2-0 up and then Leeds pulled a goal back, so the boys had to show their character. We then got a late third to settle things and came away with the win.

"It is a start, but that's all it is. We still have two very tough games to come against Surf Select and Co Down.

"We just have to recover from this game and then go again on Tuesday. The boys are up for the challenge, and I think they proved that against Leeds.

"What can we achieve this year? Well, we have a good squad, but the other teams in the Junior Section are also very good so it will be a massive test all week."

McClean says Co Antrim are delighted to be back at the SuperCupNI after missing the past two years due to Covid-19.

"There is a real buzz around the place. Everyone has been relishing this moment for a long time," he added.

"It is unfortunate we didn't have a tournament in 2020 and '21, but we are back now and everyone is raring to go."

Elsewhere in the Juniors (Under 16), Co Fermanagh beat IDA Bermuda 3-2 while Co Londonderry beat MK Dons by the same scoreline. Co Tyrone drew 1-1 with San Francisco Glens.
