Supercomputer's relegation prediction highlights size of Jesse Marsch's Leeds United task

Jesse Marsch has got an almighty job on his hands at Leeds United as he looks to keep his new side in the Premier League.

He inherits a team in freefall after picking up just one point in the last five matches, a run of games in which the Whites have conceded 20 goals.

Many supporters at Elland Road probably won’t be able to get over the departure of Marcelo Bielsa in the next few months but the club must quickly move on if they are to stay in the top flight.

The Marsch era begins in the East Midlands on Saturday as Leeds face Leicester and the fight against a potential relegation must begin at King Power Stadium.

Leeds are currently outside the relegation zone by a couple of points but have played two more games than both Everton and Burnley below them.

As a result of that, FiveThirtyEight are predicting the Whites to be one of the three sides who will drop into the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Their most recent prediction, which takes into account all the mitigating factors, has Leeds finishing the season 18th in the Premier League, above Norwich and Watford with a points tally of 36.

The sports forecasting website expects the gap to the survival places to be just the singular point with both Everton and Brentford predicted to finish on 37 points.

Should that prediction come true, it would mean that Leeds only accumulate 13 more points in their final 12 games of the season.

Marsch will be keen to prove the number crunchers wrong.
