Supercomputer reset after Celtic charge forces boffins into rethink about Rangers' title credentials

After Celtic 's 1-1 draw with Dundee United a month ago, it was already beginning to seem like their chances of winning the title were slim-to-none.

After six games, they were in sixth place, six points off Rangers and equidistant between top spot and tenth place.

Oh how quickly times change.

A month later, Ange Postecoglou' s troops have rounded out the first round of fixtures with a victory at Easter Road.

And they sit just two points off the defending champions who are peering over their shoulder with alarm.

While Postecoglou was quick to berate anyone who wrote his side off so early, those predictions were rooted in fact.

Take supercomputer FiveThirtyEight, who had Rangers as a 71 per cent likely shot to win the title the day after their 1-0 win over Dundee last month.

They rated Celtic's chances at 25 per cent at the same time.

Now, however, it's an entirely different story.

Following the midweek round of fixtures, where Rangers clawed a point against Aberdeen while Celtic thumped Hibs, it's now a far more optimistic picture for the Hoops.

They've gradually chipped away at Rangers' lead and the Ibrox side are now down 20 per cent to 51 per cent.

Celtic, by contrast, have seen their chances almost double. They are now right behind at 47 per cent with many observers noting the next run of fixtures favours the Parkhead side.

Hearts may be just a point behind Celtic as things stand but they are given just a one per cent chance of defying the Glasgow dominance and going all the way.

And at the other end, it's Dundee - who just lost 5-0 to Ross County - the boffins believe are most likely to finish in last place.
