Supercomputer predicts Newcastle United's Premier League finish and result vs Leeds United

A supercomputer which forecasts Premier League results and the likelihood of events happening, has predicted that Newcastle United will be relegated from the Premier League this season after finishing 18th on 37 points.

Newcastle avoided relegation to the Championship last season after putting together a run of five wins from their last eight Premier League outings, which saw them finish the campaign in an impressive twelfth place.

However, statistics based site FiveThirtyEight have calculated the metrics of each side in the Premier League by using 'forecasts based on a substantially revised version of ESPN’s Soccer Power Index (SPI)'.

Meaning they are able to take into account the likelihood of one Premier League side claiming victory over another, whilst also being able to forecast where a side will finish after the 38-game season has finished.

The site calculates that there is a 39% chance the Magpie will finish in the bottom three this season, the third-highest percentage in the division.

Steve Bruce 's side have only managed to yield one point from their opening four Premier League games, which came as a result of a 2-2 draw against Southampton.

The Magpies currently sit 19th in the league ahead of their clash with Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United, who also find themselves winless after the opening four matches.

And going into tonight's game, FiveThirtyEight have predicted that it will be the Whites who come away from the fixture with all three points; as they have Leeds are listed at 39% chances of winning, compared to the 37% chance Bruce's side are adjudged to have.

Pressure has continued to grow on the Toon boss in recent weeks with supporters far from impressed by Bruce's preparation for certain games, as well as the results achieved.
