Supercomputer predicts Manchester United's end of season fate

Manchester United are expected to finish in second-place in the Premier League this season, according to a leading football supercomputer.

United are 14 points behind leaders Manchester City as it stands, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side on course to finish the season as runners-up to their local rivals.

The Reds are eight points clear of fifth-place West Ham United as Solskjaer looks to secure Champions League qualification once again, after a dramatic final day win over Leicester City in the last campaign that ensured they'd be competing amongst Europe's finest.

The FiveThirtyEight supercomputer values United's chance of reaching the European competition again as 94%, with third-place Leicester having a 70% chance.

The website use SPI ratings, which have an attacking and defensive component, to determine which team is likely to win specific games and eventually how many points they will accumulate.

It has predicted Solskjaer's team to finish the season in second-place on 74 points, which would mean a further 17 points to be gained from United's remaining nine Premier League games.

The supercomputer thinks the Reds will boast a five-point gap over the Foxes, who are predicted to finish third.

United still have to go to Tottenham, as well as home games against Liverpool and Leicester - with those three fixtures being the most difficult games on paper.

The 20-time champions of England are back in Premier League action this weekend following the two-week international break.

United take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford, but could be behind Leicester before they kick a ball.

The Foxes have a very difficult task, though, as they welcome Manchester City to the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
