Supercomputer predicts Hamilton Accies face dramatic finish to the season as Motherwell stay up

Hamilton Accies have been predicted to face a dramatic finish to the Scottish Premiership season - avoiding automatic relegation on goal difference.

Brian Rice's side are currently bottom of the table and three points adrift of Ross County with two games in hand.

But FiveThirtyEight's supercomputer has calculated that Accies will climb to 11th spot by the end of the season and avoid relegation by five goals from Ross County.

The drama doesn't end there, though, with Accies' predicted finish meaning they will face a play-off to avoid relegation from the top flight, where they would have to overcome a side from the Championship to survive.

The statistics website uses data including average expected goals scored, average expected goals conceded and even transfer activity to crunch the numbers and forecast how the campaign could finish up.

Meanwhile, Motherwell are expected to survive comfortably with a strong finish to the campaign.

New boss Graham Alexander took over with the Steelmen bottom of the table, but they are already up to ninth spot.

And the Supercomputer reckons they wll climb to eighth and finish the season one point behind St Johnstone.

Current runaway league leaders Rangers are, of course, set to finish top of the tree ahead of Celtic, who are predicted to close the current gap of 21 points down to 18 by the end of the campaign.

The predicted final standings are as follows:

1) Rangers  99 points GD +75

2) Celtic  81 +53

3) Hibs  64 +15

4) Aberdeen  57 -1

5) Livingston  53 +2

6) St Mirren  46 +1-

7) St Johnstone  44 -10

8) Motherwell  43 -13

9) Dundee United  42 -20

10) Kilmarnock  36 -17

11) Hamilton Accies  33 -34

12) Ross County  33 -39
