Supercomputer makes Champions League prediction - it's not looking good for Spurs & Liverpool

Spurs and Liverpool both have it all to do next week when the Champions League returns.

The Lilywhites fell to a 1-0 defeat against Ajax on Tuesday evening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Donny van de Beek netted the crucial goal early on.

As the Dutch side netted a vital away goal in north London, it means Spurs will have to win and score at least twice if they want to progress through to avoid the game going into extra time.

While it certainly looks possible for Mauricio Pochettino's team given a few key players could return for the game in Amsterdam, Liverpool really have a mountain to climb after slipping to a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

Trailing to Luis Suarez's smart finish in the first half, Lionel Messi hit a double, including a stunning 30-yard free-kick, after the break to give them a big lead heading into the second leg at Anfield.

So, what are the chances that Spurs and Liverpool can progress through to the final in Madrid at the start of June?

According to FiveThirtyEight's supercomputer, Spurs have a 26% chance of making the final and an 8% chance of lifting the trophy at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

It certainly looks a lot more promising for Spurs compared to Liverpool after their crushing defeat in Spain.

Jurgen Klopp's side now have only a 6% chance of qualifying for the final, with the chances of the Reds lifting the trophy for the first time since 2005 at 4%.

Barcelona, unsurprisingly, lead the way with a 94% chance of reaching the final and 64% chance of winning the Europe's elite competition, with Ajax at 74% and 24% respectively.

The second legs of the Champions League semi-finals will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday.
