Supercomputer issues Leeds United promotion verdict after West Brom's surprise defeat

Leeds United's promotion charge received a boost on Monday evening, as title-rivals West Bromwich Albion suffered a surprise defeat at home against Championship strugglers Stoke City.

The Baggies had the opportunity to move four points ahead of Marcelo Bielsa's side with a victory, but their defeat means there is just a five-point gap between the league leaders and third-placed Fulham.

That deficit would be reduced to just three points if Nottingham Forest win their game in hand, with the dip in form for both West Brom and United blowing the hunt for promotion to the Premier League wide open.

While there are plenty of twists and turns ahead, the number-crunchers at FiveThirtyEight have given Leeds fans a reason to be optimistic with their latest verdict.

Following West Brom's defeat, the supercomputer has given Leeds a 45 per cent likelihood of winning the title and a whopping 76 per cent likelihood of securing promotion to the top-flight.

In comparison, Slaven Bilic's side have a 21 per cent likelihood of winning the title and a 55 per cent likelihood of promotion, which means they are not even the second-favourites in the hunt for promotion.

Instead, that honour belongs to Brentford, who are given a 62 per cent chance of rising to the Premier League and a 21 per cent likelihood of lifting the title at the end of the season.

Every other side in the division has less than a 10 per cent chance of winning the title, while Fulham are 33 per cent likely to earn promotion and Nottingham Forest at 14 per cent - with everyone else rated as less than 10 per cent likely.

In terms of the play-offs, West Brom and Brentford are both 46 per cent likely to compete for the final promotion spot, with Fulham at 54 per cent and Nottingham Forest at 40 per cent.

The other sides in the hunt for a top-six finish are Millwall (29 per cent), Swansea City (27 per cent), Sheffield Wednesday (24 per cent), Bristol City (22 per cent) and Preston (20 per cent).
