Supercomputer issues Leeds United European verdict as Marcelo Bielsa's men climb global rankings

After navigating the toughest month of their season without tasting defeat, the more optimistic Leeds United fans are beginning to wonder about the prospects of qualification for European football.

Manchester City's Carabao Cup win at the weekend opened up another European spot for the Premier League, meaning this season's seventh-place finishers will qualify for next season's new Europa Conference League.

Marcelo Bielsa's side currently sit ninth in the Premier League table, so what are the chances of moving up two further places over the final five matches of the season?

Six points currently separate Leeds and Tottenham, who currently occupy sixth place and also enjoy a far better goal difference than the Whites.

The two sides meet at Elland Road on May 8, while Leeds' other four remaining fixtures see them face sides currently in the bottom third of the table.

It's therefore easy to understand why the whispers are starting to be heard, but the data being spat out by FiveThirtyEight's supercomputer offers a more ground approach.

The American website, which uses complex modeling systems to predict anything from US elections to the Championship play-off race, have updated their Premier League predictions following this weekend's action and do not see Leeds making a late dash for Europe.

Their forecasted end-of-season table see Leeds finishing in tenth place on 54 points, one place and one point behind Arsenal, who currently trail Bielsa's men in the actual table.

They predict a level goal difference for Leeds, while Tottenham take seventh place, behind West Ham in sixth and Liverpool in fifth.

Another mark of Leeds' progress of late can be seen in their Global Club Soccer Rankings, which aims to rank 636 global teams.

Top of that pile is Manchester City - Leeds' victims a fortnight ago - with Liverpool and Man United also in the top five and also unable to beat the Whites this month.

The great and the good of European football dominate the list, with Leeds coming in as the 44th-best side in the world. That is up four places from last week and sees them ranking above Europea League semi-finalists Roma, who come in at 47th.
