Supercomputer delivers bad news for Newcastle United as Premier League finishes predicted

FiveThirtyEight predicts that Newcastle United have a staggering 77% chance of being relegated this season.

The Magpies are currently rock-bottom of the Premier League and have failed to win since the final day of the 2020/21 campaign - more than six months ago.

Newcastle face Burnley in a crucial six-pointer on Saturday, but a rotten December run after that sees them face Leicester (a), Liverpool (a), Man City (h) and Man Utd (a), with fans fearing the club’s fate may already be sealed by the time the January transfer window opens.

Now, FiveThirtyEight’s supercomputer - which uses statistical information and detailed data analysis to calculate how the Premier League table will finish in May - thinks Newcastle are already doomed.

The table estimates a 20th-placed finish for Eddie Howe’s men this season, a far cry away from the trophy-laden years fans have been dreaming about since the Saudi-backed takeover was approved in October.

Worse still, the supercomputer thinks Newcastle will finish on a measly 29 points - their worst-ever tally in the Premier League.

No team in top-flight history has ever stayed up after failing to win any of their opening 14 games, meaning Newcastle will need to buck the trend in order to avoid becoming the richest club in the Championship next season.

However, relegation rivals Burnley do offer some hope for Toon fans.

The Clarets are currently 18th and are judged to have a 34% chance of survival, giving the Magpies an outside chance of beating the drop ahead of a crunch festive period.
