Supercars puts line through Winton event

The Supercars event at Winton in Victoria has been cancelled as the championship's COVID-enforced hiatus extends into a third month.

Officials confirmed on Thursday the event, scheduled for October 2-3, had been wiped with NSW and Victoria still battling COVID outbreaks.

It means Supercars will not race in Victoria again this year after the earlier cancellation of a SuperSprint event at Phillip Island.

"We regret that the COVID-19 situation has led to the cancellation of both the Winton and Phillip Island events and share our Victorian fans' disappointment that we will not be returning to the state in 2021," Supercars chief executive Sean Seamer said.

The cancellation means the 2021 championship has been on hold since the completion of back-to-back weekends in Townsville in July.

The Gold Coast 500 was cancelled last week, leaving a visit to Sydney Motorsport Park in November and the season-ending Bathurst 1000 on December 5 as the only remaining events on this year's calendar.

The chances of the championship racing in Sydney in November appear bleak given that city's COVID situation.

Holden driver Shane van Gisbergen leads the championship, 276 points clear of teammate Jamie Whincup.

Ticket holders for the Winton races will be issued with a full refund in 21 days, Supercars said.
