Supercars back on track in October

Shane van Gisbergen will take a big lead into the Supercars season resumption in NSW next month. (AAP)

The interrupted Supercars championship will get back on track next month with four back-to-back weekends of racing at Sydney Motorsport Park.

COVID dramas across the country have wreaked havoc with the 2021 championship, which has been on hiatus since back-to-back events in Townsville in July.

Events at Winton, Phillip Island and Surfers Paradise have all had to be abandoned while the showpiece Bathurst 1000 has been delayed.

The championship will return with the first of four events at the Eastern Creek facility in western Sydney from October 29.

Further events will be held on the following three weekends featuring a variety of formats and regulations as well as night racing.

The championship will then head to Mt Panorama for the season-ending Bathurst 1000 on December 5.

It means all remaining races will be conducted in NSW.

Shane van Gisbergen holds a formidable points lead from veteran Jamie Whincup heading into the season resumption.

"What an exciting five-week period for motorsport in NSW with five spectacular events to round out the 2021 Supercars Championship season," NSW jobs and tourism minister Stuart Ayres said.

Fans will be able to attend all of the events with ticket information to be communicated by Supercars in the near future.
