Super Tuesday: Joe Biden wins Alabama primary

REUTERS

Joe Biden has won the presidential primary in Alabama, adding to early Super Tuesday wins for the former vice president in Virginia and North Carolina.

The demonstrated the strong support for Mr Biden in the American South, and the black voters across those states.

The former vice president's future in the Democratic primary race has been clarified in recent days, following a decisive win in the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

That marked the first win for Mr Biden in any primary state during any of his three runs at the presidency.

The win also led to a consolidation of support for Mr Biden, with Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg both dropping out of the race in the past two days.

Those candidates both endorsed Mr Biden during a rally on Monday night, alongside Texan Beto O'Rourke, who also endorsed Mr Biden.

With the early wins in place, the night was looking particularly strong for Mr Biden early on.

But, several states remained with polls open, including delegate rich California, which is heavily favoured to support Bernie Sanders.
