Super Swifts shake off horror start to trample Giants

The NSW Swifts have overcome a shambolic start to maintain their hold on top spot of the Super Netball ladder, coming from behind to steamroll the Giants 75-66 at a sold-out Ken Rosewall Arena.

A boilover was brewing in Sunday's Sydney derby when the Giants stormed to a shock 21-10 quarter-time lead, before the Swifts ate into the deficit, then emphatically charged home.

NSW got better as the game wore on, winning the last three terms 18-15, 24-16 and 23-14 to arrest a two-game losing streak and improve to 9-2.

Swifts co-captain Paige Hadley thrived after being shifted from wing attack to centre at quarter-time, while defenders Teigan O'Shannassy and Sarak Klau progressively starved the Giants' attack, which started the contest on fire.

"I feel like that was a full team effort," Hadley said.

"Obviously not the way we wanted to start that game, but to be able to grind it out in those last three (quarters) I couldn't be prouder.

"To have 10,000 people here in red supporting us, we knew this was a must-win for our season ... super grateful for them."

The Giants used a 4-0 springboard to boss the opening stanza, Jamie-Lee Price dominant through the middle and Jo Harten a handful in attack.

Meanwhile, the Swifts' shooters came out ice-cold, hitting just 60 per cent, including 1-of-6 from two-point territory to plummet further and further behind.

NSW goal shooter Grace Nweke, who was subbed out late in the first term to make way for the long-range specialists - who misfired - returned to start the second and, along with Hadley, sparked the Swifts' turnaround.

NSW trimmed the deficit to 36-28 at halftime, before starting the third stanza on an 8-1 run to close to within a goal.

A super-shot from Swifts import Helen Housby levelled the scores late in the period, and when Giant Sophie Dwyer's two-pointer on the three-quarter-time bell missed, it was 52-52.

NSW carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, hitting the lead for the first time when Nweke goaled in the first five seconds and never relinquishing their advantage as the Giants came undone with turnovers and penalties.
