Super Smith a key architect in Bristol City win and can help lay top six foundations

What a result on Saturday for the Robins as Andi Weimann netted his first league hat-trick.

However, as well as the sudden form of the Austrian, and a vital three points for Bristol City, perhaps the best thing to happen this weekend was not even that six-game losing run ending but the return - and instant impact - of key midfielder Korey Smith in the middle of the pitch.

Smith, 28, was appearing again after a seven month layoff courtesy of a knee injury sustained against Middlesbrough at the end of last August, but you wouldn't have been able to tell given how the former Norwich man snapped into tackles and dictated play from the centre of the pitch in true terrier style.

In many regards, the early goal - as it so often does - helped settle the conceding team and establish a pattern to the game.

The Blades had not conceded for seven games in a row yet had done three times before the end of Saturday's match as Chris Wilder's outfit suffered only a second home defeat of 2019 and the opposition found the net at Bramall Lane for the first time in a league contest this year too.

And maybe that helped Smith to get on the ball and dictate - and so he accepted the invitation.

Combinations on the right with Jack Hunt led to crossing opportunities and from those came Weimann's first goal and City's renaissance.

'This is our club, we should be so proud' - what Bristol City fans are saying after a brilliant victory at Sheffield United

And from then Smith was splendid.

A through-ball almost released Famara Diedhiou early on before a pass later in the second period helped Josh Brownhill into dangerous area. There were plenty more in a jackrabbit midfield display, with Smith popping up all over the field to either win the ball or cleverly prompt the Robins forward. Welcome back, Korey.

In the end, he recorded (according to the post-match Opta stats, and playing only 73 minutes of the game):

  • 34 passes completed from 37
  • 11 attacking third passes completed from 13
  • Two chances created (equal second most in the match)
  • 3 ball recoveries
  • Fouled twice (equal second most in the match)

The returning Robin could yet help help the Robins return into the top six positions in the league and the Championship play-offs.
