Get ready to see your favorite pair of Italian plumbers again very soon, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit the big screen this year. That's right, in just a matter of months, we'll see Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach travel to new lands and take on even more baddies plucked right from the Super Mario Bros. games. Plus, thanks to Nintendo, we just got our first look at some very important characters joining the franchise. But more on that later.
Released in 2023, the first Super Mario Bros. Movie saw the duo begin what they thought would be a regular day of plumbing work, only to be transported through a mysterious pipe to a magical new world where they took on Jack Black's Bowser. However, despite Nintendo keeping pretty tight-lipped on what the sequel will entail, we know from the title and the first set of trailers that the movie will take inspiration from the Super Mario Galaxy game, amongst others.
Right here, we've rounded up absolutely everything there is to know about Super Mario Galaxy, from who's who in the cast (including those new additions), what the trailer shows, and our best guess at the plot based on the game and what has been shown so far. It's well worth getting up to date, since this is one of the most exciting upcoming video game movies. Ready? Then let's-a go!
Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie release date is April 1, 2026. That's just under three years from the first movie's release, on April 5, 2023.
The sequel was first set to hit screens on April 3, 2026, but during a Nintendo Direct on January 2025, the new trailer showed that the sequel will now be hitting the big screen two days earlier. We just hope that Nintendo won't play an April Fool's joke on us all.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer
The first full length trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy movie was released during a dedicated Nintendo Direct on November 12, 2025. This trailer shows off Rosalina, introduces Bowser Jr., and even teases a connection to Super Mario Odyssey. Check it out above. This came after the first teaser for Super Mario Galaxy Movie was released on September 12's Nintendo Direct, confirming the movie's official title.
However, during January 25's Nintendo Direct in 2026, Nintendo and Illumination revealed yet another Super Mario Galaxy trailer, which gave us our first look at fan-favourite character Yoshi. Check it out below.
Not only does the new trailer introduce Yoshi in the sweetest way possible, but the clip also includes shots of some major villains taken right from the games, such as Birdie and Super Mario Bros. 2's Mouser.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie plot

While not much has been confirmed about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie plot just yet, we can take our cues from the game, Super Mario Galaxy, to have an idea of what we can expect.
The game starts off with a Star Festival to watch a passing comet. But, the festival is ruined when Bowser attacks and kidnaps Princess Peach (by taking the castle, with her inside, into outer space).
Mario ends up in space himself in an attempt to stop the kidnapping, where he meets Rosalina, who takes care of tiny creatures shaped like stars named Luma. She tells him that her home, the Comet Observatory (a kind of spaceship), was attacked by Bowser in the past – and the devious villain stole its power source, aptly named Power Stars, so the Observatory is stuck. Mario then sets off on a quest to collect the Power Stars and repower the Observatory (and, of course, save Peach).
But, there'll be more to the story than what happens in the game. "While the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era," said Illumination's Chris Meledandri.
He added: "Our directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and our team of artists are busy working to deliver a film that aspires to earn its place in the history we're here to celebrate. Brian Tyler is also returning to compose a score that incorporates themes from Mario's incredible game heritage."
We got our first glimpse at Rosalina in the film's full length trailer. She'll be voiced by Brie Larson. The first trailer didn't give away much about the plot, however. What it did tease is that Rosalina is under threat, while Mario and Luigi go to visit the miniaturized Bowser in his tiny castle. It also seems that the movie will take inspiration from Super Mario Odyssey, judging by the sandy desert scene.

Rosalina and Bowser Jr. won't be the only newcomers added to the sequel, though. When we asked Mario star Chris Pratt if there are any new characters he's looking forward to seeing in the finished film, he told GamesRadar+, "I'm not allowed to say what they are, but yes, there are some really incredible… Well, I think some of them have been released in the trailer – Rosalina, Bowser Jr. – and then there's even a couple more that are not in the trailer that people should be excited to see."
In the second trailer, we got our first look at Mario's trusty steed Yoshi, who we already knew would be joining the sequel thanks to the first film's post-credits. The footage sees Yoshi getting a lot of attention, which seems to make Toad a little mad. The little dino also faces up to a very real dinosaur whilst holding onto baby Mario and Luigi.
It seems as though even the cast cannot shed any light on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie's official synopsis. When asked about the sequel, Jack Black told GamesRadar+, "I am a sworn to secrecy, but there's tons of Easter eggs, and anyone who loves that universe will be very pleased with the way that it's been brought to the big screen."
