'Super League most shameless gluttony but revulsion is victory for decency over greed'

And so the most shameless act of gluttony and self-interest in football’s history begins to crumble.

The tsunami of revulsion across the sport and wider society meant it was inevitable.

But it is still a heart-warming victory for decency over greed.

The sharks behind this power-grab, most with little connection to the culture of English football, were incredibly naive not to foresee the bulk of their fans cared more about the sanctity of football than they did about their clubs being elevated into some protected rich elite.

And the worst thing they could have done was attempt to bully them into it.

But for some loyal fans, sickened by repeated attempts from outside vultures to steal their precious heritage, terminal damage may have been done.

They were humiliated and told in no uncertain terms they didn’t count.

That slogans about “meaning more” and all the words of solidarity when they send out season ticket renewals, mean nothing.

It will take a lot to repair the trust. Those flags Liverpool fans demanded to remove from the Kop won’t be going back any time soon.

Neither may some of the owners.
