Super-keen England star reports for Nations League finals duty WHOLE WEEK early

Fabian Delph has reported for England duty A WEEK EARLY to try to win a place in Gareth Southgate’s Nations League Finals line-up.

Three Lions boss Southgate has seen his plans for June's tournament in Portugal disrupted with a number of his squad involved in either Saturday’s FA Cup Final or the two all-Premier League European finals next week.

That persuaded him to allow players to report on three different dates to give them all a break before next month’s tournament.

Manchester City’s Treble winners are among those not due in until next Monday.

But midfielder Delph, who has not played since April 9, decided to join up at St George’s Park ahead of schedule and alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Harry Maguire and Jordan Pickford, who all finished their club seasons on May 12.

Delph has been an integral part of Southgate’s set-up, even captaining England against USA last November and, despite his limited chances at City, kept his place in the squad.

The likes of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and fellow midfielder Eric Dier of Tottenham will not report until Monday June 3 after the Champions League Final between their two clubs on the Saturday night.

The Liverpool and Spurs contingents only arrive three days before England’s Nations League semi-final against Holland.

Speaking last week about having to quickly raise the spirits of players down-in-the-dumps after losing European club football's biggest game, Southgate said: “I think the psychological (factor) is huge. But in the end you’re 30 years in football and the knowledge of what it is to go into those big matches and come out on either side, that has to guide you.

“We know the individual players really well, to be able to sense when they are feeling in the right place and when they are not.

You pick some of that up on the training pitch, but you pick a lot up from conversations and body language — and they can’t hide.

"As a coach, one of the biggest things is to observe well, and you are constantly watching their behaviours.

“But I wouldn’t say the guys that win are going to be fine and ready for a game either. They will have had an enormous high and that needs a lot of refocusing on to another challenge in a very small space of time.

“I don’t think it’s as straightforward as those that win are great and ready to go. Those that lose might be ready to get out there and be ready to fight.”
