Super-handy live traffic map shows how busy Edinburgh's roads are, as city named 'most congested'

Edinburgh has been named the UK's "most congested" city – but there's a super-handy live traffic map which can help you beat the queues.

Tom Tom have created a useful tool which is designed to "help you tackle traffic – as a driver, city planner, automaker or policy maker".

According to their latest study, the Scottish capital is the most congested city in the whole of the UK when it comes to how much longer a trip takes at peak time, compared to uncongested conditions.

Tom Tom say that Edinburgh is 41 per cent busier, worse than London at 38 per cent and Brighton and Hove (35 per cent). The research shows that Edinburgh has actually gotten one per cent busier in the last year.

It was found that the best time to avoid the roads in the city is on a Wednesday between 5pm and 6pm, and travelling after 6pm could save you as much as eight hours each year for a 30-minute commute.

In all the average person has lost 172 hours, of seven days and four hours, to rush hour traffic which is, according to Tom Tom, enough time to listen to Imagine by John Lennon 3307 times or watch 152 episodes of Game of Thrones.

Across the whole week, Friday is the day with least rush hour traffic while Monday is second quietest. The busiest days for morning and evening rush hour journeys are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Fascinating figures also revealed the busiest and quietest days on the road in 2019.

Unsurprisingly, the day with least traffic congestion was actually Christmas Day, while the busiest day was Tuesday, 29 October.
