Super Flower Moon captured gracing skies across UK in stunning photos

These stunning images show the colourful supermoon that has graced our skies tonight.

London's skyscrapers and iconic sights such as Tower Bridge were illuminated by the beautiful sight.

It also lit up iconic buildings and skies around the world, including in Japan, Italy and India.

"The wonders of this beautiful earth we live in," wrote one captivated admirer.

The full moon in May is also known as the "flower moon", signifying the flowers that bloom during the month.

The moon was fully illuminated thanks to its location on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun.

It is around 6% larger than a typical full moon and around 14% bigger than a micromoon, which is when the moon is at its furthest point from Earth.

In one beautiful image the fiery shade moon can be partially seen next to skyscrapers in the capital while in another it appears to be almost striped as it floats above a dramatic view.

In a third picturesque photo just the bottom half of the supermoon can be seen between Tower Bridge in London.

The moon resembles a glowing fire ball in another image captured at the Chesterton Windmill, Chesterton.

The supermoon is the fourth one this year and once it fades just before midnight, it will not make another appearance until April 2021.

This particular moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Flower Moon but it also has several other names.

Another eye-catching photo of the supermoon captured in Turkey at the Camlica Mosque shows it looking a more sober yet bright shade of yellow.

A NASA spokesman said: “Going by the seasons, as the second full Moon of spring, the Native American tribes of the northeastern United States called this the Flower Moon, as flowers are abundant this time of year in most of these areas.

“Other names include the Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon.”

Dr Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory, told the PA news agency: "Technically the exact moment of full moon is 11.45am, however the moon will not be visible in the sky in the UK at that time."

"But the Earth's natural satellite will still appear bigger than usual on Thursday morning, when it sets at around 5.42am in London, as well as on Thursday evening, when it rises at around 8.44pm.

"Times for moonrise and set vary slightly across the UK, but not by more than about 10 minutes or so."

He added: "The moon's orbit around the Earth is not entirely circular, instead a slightly flattened circle or ellipse.

"As such, it is sometimes closer to and sometimes further away from the Earth.

"While definitions vary, a supermoon typically occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon being within the closest 10% of its orbit."

The three other supermoons lit up the sky on February 9, March 9 and April 8.

The next supermoon will take place on April 27 2021.

"Because of how the dynamics of orbits work, these usually occur in runs of two or three with longer gaps of several months between each set of supermoons," Dr Brown said.
