Super Bowl 2023: Kansas City Chiefs to face Philadelphia Eagles after dramatic last-gasp field goal

The Kansas City Chiefs will meet the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on February 12 after their respective Conference Championship wins on Sunday night.

It will be a third Super Bowl appearance in four seasons for the Chiefs, who needed a last-ditch field goal to earn a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who defied a high ankle sprain suffered in last week’s win over Jacksonville and played through the pain at Arrowhead Stadium, put the Chiefs in position for Harrison Butker’s game-winning 45-yard field goal.

In what was a repeat of last year’s AFC Championship game, Mahomes found Travis Kelce and Marquez Valdes-Scantling for their respective touchdowns from 14 and 19 yards out.

But a Mahomes fumble paved the way for the Bengals to level courtesy of Ja’Marr Chase’s touchdown, which led to a tense finale and Butker’s heroics.

The unlikely star of this NFL season, Brock Purdy, aka ‘Mr Irrelevant’ as the last pick in the 2022 draft, could not quite make it a fairytale finish for the San Francisco 49ers against Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

His hopes of becoming the first rookie quarterback to reach a Super Bowl were denied as an injury-ravaged 49ers - already without top signal-callers Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo - lost out 31-7 in a one-sided affair, losing both Purdy and fourth-string quarterback Josh Johnson during the game.
