A 24-year-old Sunshine Coast woman has been charged over a crash that killed her teenage passenger in December last year.

Police allege the woman was driving under the influence of drugs after leaving a licensed venue about 4am on December 9, before she veered and crashed into a pole.

Emergency crews were called to the crash on Vise Road in Mons where they treated the 19-year-old woman for life threatening injuries after she became trapped in the vehicle.

The driver suffered an arm injury and was treated on scene.

Both women were transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, but the 19-year-old has since been declared dead, having not survived her injuries.

Queensland Police have charged a 24-year-old Diddillibah woman with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and driving with a drug present in her blood.

She is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on March 4.

Worst year on Qld roads in five years

Acting Supt Overland said the crash happened on the first day of Road Safety Week, marking 2020 the worst year of road fatalities since 2015.

"It's unfathomable, it's something we've really got to work on as a community.

"We can only do so much as a police service with enforcement, we can't be everywhere."

Acting Supt Overland said QPS was pleading with drivers to take more care.

"This really is a plea with drivers to be sensible, use common sense, don't drive if you've been drinking, don't get in a car with anyone who's [under the influence]," he said.
