Suns win lottery; Kings will pick second in next month's draft

CHICAGO _ The Kings just missed out on winning the NBA draft lottery Tuesday at Palmer House Hilton and will have the second overall pick in next month's draft.

The Phoenix Suns, who had the best chance at the top pick, won the lottery. The Atlanta Hawks will select third.

The Kings _ represented in Chicago by point guard De'Aaron Fox, who at No. 5 was Sacramento's top pick last year _ entered the lottery in the seventh slot after losing a coin flip with Chicago after both teams finished 27-55 this season. However, Sacramento was drawn into the top three.

The Kings have the longest current streak of being in the lottery at 12 consecutive seasons. Before Tuesday, the Kings had only moved up in the lottery once, last year, when the team moved up to No. 3. However, they picked fifth because of a 2015 trade with Philadelphia that gave the 76ers the right to swap picks with Sacramento.

The Kings used that No. 5 pick on Fox, their highest selection since taking DeMarcus Cousins fifth in the 2010 draft.

The Kings also surrendered the rights their first-round pick in next year's draft in the deal with the 76ers.

The NBA draft is June 21.
