Suns reportedly to waive Chris Paul; should the Boston Celtics inquire about signing him?

Phoenix Suns veteran point guard Chris Paul has been waived according to new reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes. Per Haynes, “Paul plans to play for several more years and is eager to help a team contend for a championship.”

With the 17-season veteran reportedly looking to join a contender, fans of the Boston Celtics are salivating over the prospect of Paul being willing to sign with the Celtics on a discount. While the onetime Wake Forest star is certainly past his prime, his knowledge of the game, leadership and ability to squeeze more out of his teammates while moving the ball would undoubtedly be an invaluable addition to the club’s roster.

He averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game with the Suns in 2022-23. While he might be looking for more money than the limited funds Boston might have available, this is a situation worth monitoring.

UPDATE: Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns are still exploring their options regarding Paul’s future with the team.

Per Woj, “Phoenix had a series of conversations with … Paul and his representatives on the All-Star point guard’s future with the franchise … including the possibility that he could be waived by the NBA’s June 28 guarantee date on his contract.”
