The sunny weather spell has broken abruptly in the ACT with close to 20 millimetres of rain falling on the capital since Monday afternoon.
Little difference is forecast for Tuesday with up to 15 millimetres of rain on its way. Temperatures are predicted at a top of 16 degrees today, after a low of 7 overnight.
The wet weather has already caused disruptions on Canberra roads with traffic slowed on most major thoroughfares.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned further thunderstorms could hit Canberra on Tuesday afternoon, following a spectacular thunder and lightning show on Monday night.
Wet weather appears to have settled in for the first half of the week with BOM forecasting a very high chance of showers in the morning on Wednesday.
BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said Canberrans could expect an easing, clearing trend on Thursday with the potential for a couple of showers then.

"We haven't got any warnings at the moment and at this stage we're not expecting any," Mr Reid said.
"There was a little bit of wild weather as the system moves through Victoria but at this stage not expecting anything too concerning through the ACT."
The wet weather has forced sportsgrounds across the ACT to be closed to training on Tuesday.
However, matches that have been scheduled will still be able to go ahead.
An ACT government spokesman said the condition of the grounds would be assessed, with the closure potentially to extend into Wednesday, depending on the amount of rain received.
Synthetic fields at Melrose and Nicholls, along with the Woden athletics track, will remain open despite the downpours.
