Sunflowers in Mae Hong Son

Until Dec 10, the "2017 Blossoming Bua Tong Flowers On Doi Mae U-Khor" festival takes place in and around fields of dok bua tong, or Mexican sunflowers, on Doi Mae U-Khor in Khun Yuam district, Mae Hong Son province.

These flowers are in full bloom on more than 500 rai of the mountain, which is more than 1,000m above sea level. This "field of gold" is on the must-see list under the Tourism Authority of Thailand's "Thailand Dream Destination Project".

Originating in Central America and the Caribbean, dok bua tong is said to have been brought into Thailand by Christian missionaries and were previously called bung tong. Visitors can also enjoy shopping at a local fair selling arts, crafts, local goods and farm produce.

Historical festival

Until Sunday, the "Phimai Festival 2017" is being held at Phimai Historical Park and on the banks of the Chakkarat River in Phimai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The annual fair celebrates the glory of Phimai during the reign of Khmer King Jayavarman VII, who ordered the construction of numerous Khmer temples, including Phimai Temple, during his reign more than 1,000 years ago.

The event includes a special exhibition in honour of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a nightly light-and-sound show and the annual Phimai Boat Race over the weekend.

Other activities are an exhibition on the history of Phimai, a local fair selling local products, arts and crafts, cultural performances, a Korat Cat Competition, Pad Mee Korat and som tam cooking demonstrations.

River Kwai fair

From Nov 24 to Dec 3, the annual "River Kwai Bridge And Red Cross Fair" will be held at the River Kwai Bridge and Kleeb Bua Field in Muang district, Kanchanaburi province.

A highlight is A Hero Of The Kwai River: The Musical depicting the life of Kanchanaburi native Boonpong Sirivejjabhandu, who helped many of the prisoners of war who were forced to build the Death Railway during World War II. The musical will blend a light-and-sound show and be staged twice a day at 7pm and 9pm.

Marigolds in Korat

The seasonal PB Flower Park at the PB Valley Khao Yai Winery, Nakhon Ratchasima, will open on Sunday and run until the end of February 2018.

The 16 rai park showcases 9,999 marigolds in the shape of the Thai number nine to honour the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, as well as more than 60 kinds of flowering trees.

A return tram transfer is available for 20 baht per person. It is an add-on to PB Valley Khao Yai Winery's regular vineyard and winery tour.
