Sunflower meadow with farm animals and café 40 minutes from Liverpool

Sunflower season is here and there’s a beautiful meadow you can explore just a short drive from Liverpool.

The sunflower field in Little Heath Farm Shop is open for visitors and is proving popular.

But if you want to visit you will need to be quick, as next weekend will be the last.

As well as enjoying a stroll through the meadow of glorious sunflowers, the farm will be making sure visitors don’t leave feeling hungry. Little Heath has been firing up its barbecue, serving bacon and sausage barms for £5 from 10am, then burgers and hotdogs from lunchtime onwards, all made with fresh meat from the farm, reports MEN.

There’s also a farm shop on site and ice cream available. Families are also able to meet animals on the farm, with pigs, cows and sheep on site.

The sunflower field proved hugely popular last year so this year, Little Heath has changed location on their farm site at Dunham Massey, to provide a larger car park.

The farm is run by Sue and Mark Jones, with son Tom, 28, working between the catering and farming sides of the business.

Tom said: "We planted the sunflower field last year to try and make it arable crops for sunflower oil, but it didn't quite make the grade due to the huge popularity of it last year, so we let the field go to seed for the wildlife and birds to feed in and it was quite extraordinary to see all the birds here in the winter.

"That's what we plan to do again, although some of our neighbours were jokily complaining that we were taking all the birds away from their gardens because there was that much seed here. It's great for them to have the feed for the winter."

Entrance to the sunflower field is £2 per person on foot (under 5s free), or £5 per vehicle for car park and entry, to be paid on arrival. The money is then used for nature and conservation work on the farm, which is part of the National Trust tenancy at Dunham Massey.

Dogs must be kept on a short lead and people are reminded to wear suitable footwear. Visitors are not allowed to pick or damage the sunflowers and opening is dependent on the weather.
