Sunderland youngster signs for Gateshead FC after PL2 play-off heartache

Sunderland youngster Ryan Wombwell has signed for National League North side Gateshead FC.

The 19-year-old was part of the Black Cats U23's side that reached the play-off final of the Premier League 2.

Wombwell came off the bench as the Wearsiders were narrowly beaten on penalties at Selhurst Park.

Capable of playing in defence or in midfield, the former Sunderland youngster has signed a two-year deal with the Heed following an initial trial period.

The club have also inserted the option of a third year into his contract.

He first appeared for the Black Cats youth set up in the U18's back in March 2019, making 25 appearances across two campaigns before making the step up to the u23's side.

Wombwell made 15 appearances for the Black Cats U23's last season, clocking up over 1,000 minutes in a red and white shirt.

He becomes the latest player to make the switch to the International Stadium, with the two clubs building up a good rapport this season.

Their relationship has seen the likes of Danny Greenfield and Nelson Ogbewe both head to the Stadium of Light for trial periods, as the Black Cats look to strengthen their youth set-up.
