Sunderland waiting to assess the extent of skipper Danny Batth's injury

Sunderland are still waiting to assess Danny Batth's injury after their skipper limped off towards the end of last night's draw against Huddersfield Town. Centre-back Batth injured himself in a challenge with Jaheim Headley in the dying minutes, but he could not see the game out and was substituted with Joe Anderson coming on in his place.

Batth has started 39 of Sunderland's 43 league games this season and has been an influential member of Tony Mowbray's side as they have challenged for a play-off place. In the immediate aftermath of last night's game, Mowbray said he did not yet know the extent of the defender's injury, admitting: "I don't know, to be honest.

"I've had a chat with him but he was sitting there with a bit of ice on him. We'll see tomorrow. We're in on Wednesday, everyone will be assessed and we'll see what the team is looking like to prepare for the weekend against West Brom."

There was no Edouard Michut in the matchday squad against Huddersfield. Mowbray had said on the eve of the game that he had a fresh injury concern but did not name the player, however it turned out to be the French midfielder.

Michut has had a scan on a back problem and Mowbray is hoping he will be fit for Sunday's trip to West Brom. He said: "I don't think it's too serious.

"He had a scan on his back and it didn't show very much, but he's the one that has to train with the pain. He's obviously got a bit of damage there, and whether he can play through that or not we will see over the next few days whether he trains or not."

Sunderland's 1-1 draw against Huddersfield saw them climb to eighth place in the table, and cut the gap between themselves and the play-off places to a single point - at least, until the remainder of the Championship programme takes place tonight when several of their rivals are in action.
