Sunderland 0-1 Wigan player ratings as Black Cats lose to basement Latics

Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson will be under no illusions of size of his task aftr the Black Cats lost 1-0 to basement side Wigan.

The new boss took charge of the side despite only being at the club for a matter of hours.

But after a bright start, he saw the Black Cats go a goal down after 16 minutes.

Thelo Aasgaard took the ball on the chest on the edge of the box and played in Kyle Joseph who turned Bailey Wright to fire into the bottom left-hand corner.

Johnson had brought Aiden McGeady into the starting line-up, but was forced into a change when Denver Hume pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury.

Josh Scowen brought a superb save from the Wigan keeper in the second period but the Black Cats failed to create more chances to level the game.

Here's how James Hunter rated the players.

LEE BURGE 6

No chance with the goal and otherwise untroubled

CONOR McLAUGHLIN 6

Comfortable at right-back in the new shape

BAILEY WRIGHT 5

One costly mistake when he was outmuscled far too easily by Joseph for the goal

TOM FLANAGAN 6

Solid alongside Wright in a back four

DENVER HUME 5

Not at his best and was forced off with an injury half-an-hour in

JOSH SCOWEN 6

Header forced a brilliant save out of the keeper in the second half

GRANT LEADBITTER 6

Passed the ball well in the middle of the park

MAX POWER 5

A few decent touches and delivered a great cross for Scowen’s chance, but Sunderland need more than that from the skipper

CHRIS MAGUIRE 5

Crossing and decision-making in the final third were poor

AIDEN McGEADY 5

Looked rusty, which is no surprise given he hasn’t played first team football since July

WILL GRIGG 5

Put the work in but offered no goal threat

SUBS

CALLUM McFADZEAN 6

Replaced Hume and did OK

ELLIOT EMBLETON 5

For Power 68mins. Didn’t make an impact when he came on

DANNY GRAHAM 5

For Grigg 68mins. Sunderland didn’t look any more of a threat when he came on

JACK DIAMOND 6

For McGeady 77mins. At least he showed some attacking intent when he came on

NOT USED: Matthews, Dobson, Sanderson
