New Black Cats signing Carl Winchester, who made his debut from the bench at Plough Lane, was handed his first start, and he replaced Grant Leadbitter in midfield.
Dion Sanderson came into the side at right-back, in place of Max Power.
And Jack Diamond returned to the starting XI, with Elliot Embleton missing out.
Leadbitter, Power, and Embleton were all included on the bench.
Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe made just one alteration to the side that drew at home to Crewe Alexandra at the weekend, and that change was forced upon him.
Panutche Camara was sent off for a second bookable offence in that game, meaning he missed out tonight due to suspension, and his place was taken by Adam Lewis.
