Sunderland vs Doncaster Rovers injury news as visitors head north without their captain

Sunderland will be without several first-team players when they take on in-form Doncaster on Saturday, but the visitors will head to the Stadium of Light without some key players.

The Black Cats were dealt another injury blow as Jordan Willis suffered a ruptured patella in their midweek defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

The centre-back is set to undergo surgery and will be out for a minimum of sixth months.

Ross Stewart also suffered a setback on his road to recovery from a hamstring injury - the new signing had trained this week but aggravated the injury.

Lee Johnson will also be without Tom Flanagan (calf) and Denver Hume who is a few months away from fitness after recovering from a hamstring injury and hernia surgery.

The Black Cats head coach is hoping midfielder Carl Winchester and left-back Callum McFadzean will both be back in contention.

As for the visitors, Doncaster will be without skipper Tom Anderson and James Coppinger.

Anderson is suffering from concussion after a collision with goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe in Tuesday’s defeat at Fleetwood Town.

Veteran, and former Newcastle United trainee, Coppinger is recovering from a calf strain.

Darren Moore's side could welcome back Southampton loanee Josh Sims - who has been absent from the Rovers side since mid-December.

The 23-year-old is in the final stages of recovering from a hamstring injury that ended his first spell at the Keepmoat.

Speaking to DoncasterFreePress, Moore said: “He’s out there, fine and there’s no problems.

“He’s been one building up his fitness levels. Because of where he’s been, it’s been about getting the right amount of data from him and get the volume of training into him.

“We’ve just got to keep assessing him and seeing where he’s at.

“If it takes an extra game or two but we get the work into him so when he comes back he stays back, then we’ll do that.

“He’s trained well and we’ll look at him maybe for the weekend and see where he is at.”
