Phil Parkinson made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 against Blackpool on Wearside before Christmas.
Jordan Willis returned from a knee injury to replace Laurens De Bock in central defence, while Lynden Gooch came into the starting XI to take the place of Chris Maguire.
The third change saw Grant Leadbitter come in for George Dobson, who missed out due to a one-game suspension imposed following his red card against the Seasiders.
Bolton boss Keith Hill named the same starting XI which beat Southend United 3-2 last weekend.
That side included two former Sunderland men in Daryl Murphy and skipper Liam Bridcutt.
