Sunderland University student's death was 'unnatural', inquest told

An inquest has been opened into the death of a university student found dead at a halls of residence.

Declan John Gillgallon, 21, was found dead at The Forge u-student Village in Sunderland on February 22.

Friends paid tribute to "an exceptional musician, able to write classical compositions and play all the instruments".

Declan was also a regular contributor and primary composer to the 'X-Men: The Audio Dram‪a' podcast.

‬Podcast host Karl Dutton praised his musical ability in a special podcast show in memory of the 21-year-old and said the shows will "never be the same without him".

A two minute silence in his memory was held at The Forge halls of residence on Sunday.

At a brief inquest opening at Sunderland Civic Centre on Thursday, the coroner's officer Alison Leonard confirmed the results of a post-mortem examination are pending.

Senior coroner Derek Winter said: "Arising from police inquiries it appeared that there had been no suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement, but it also appeared that the death was unnatural.

"I am satisfied on the available information that there is reasonable cause to suspect that the death of Declan John Gillgallon was unnatural."

The inquest was adjourned until May 27.

Mr Winter added: "I intend to adjourn today's opening of the inquest having formally confirmed the identification of Declan John Gillgallon and I will adjourn to May 27 on the basis that all relevant information, documentation and statements should be to hand by that date."
