Sunderland University confirms 30 new Covid cases taking total up to more than 200

Sunderland University has confirmed 30 new coronavirus cases in the past week, taking the total number up to more than 200.

In the seven days to November 18, 26 students and four staff at the University of Sunderland have tested positive for the virus bringing the total up to 212.

In a previous statement, a spokesperson for the university said: "We are proactively and regularly monitoring and managing the situation with local and national public health experts and taking appropriate action where required.

"We continue to communicate regularly with our staff and students, to promote expected behaviours and to reinforce key information on the Government restrictions and additional guidance in place on the university campus in the interests of everybody’s health, safety and wellbeing.

"Our teaching and wider student experience activity continues both online and face-to-face, in Covid -secure setting."

Outbreaks have been reported at universities across the North East, including Newcastle, Northumbria and Durham.

An outbreak at Durham University saw nearly 1,000 students and staff members test positive within one week.

A total of 958 students and six members of staff tested positive in the week leading up to October 14, however, the number of cases at Durham has seen a drop.

It comes after Newcastle saw a similar spike in cases in the area when students returned to Newcastle and Northumbria universities.
