Sunderland to travel to Sheffield United in Carabao Cup third round

Sunderland have been drawn away to Sheffield United in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Black Cats stunned Burnley in the second round at Turf Moor, winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Will Grigg, Tom Flanagan and George Dobson.

And if they're to make the fourth round they will once again have to overcome top flight opposition away from home, with a trip to Bramall Lane awaiting them on the week commencing September 23.

That cup tie is sandwiched in between league games with Bolton (away) and MK Dons (home), with manager Jack Ross up front that the league takes priority over cups this term.

Sheffield United travel to Everton on the weekend prior to the game and then host Liverpool after.

Sunderland fans react as Black Cats progress at Burnley

Sunderland will be hoping for a better trip to Bramall Lane than their last visit, however. With both sides in the Championship back in 2017-18, Chris Wilder's side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners on Boxing Day.

As well as Burnley, the Black Cats also beat Accrington Stanley to reach this stage of the competition. The Blades, meanwhile, entered in the second round and beat Blackburn to progress.
