Sunderland to smash League One average attendance over a season record on Saturday

Sunderland will set a new record for the highest average attendance across a season in England's third tier.

The Black Cats host Portsmouth on Saturday in their final Stadium of Light fixture of the season and a huge attendance is expected.

With one game remaining Sunderland's average home attendance this season so far is 31,748 - but the club had already sold more tickets than that for Portsmouth's visit 24 hours before kick-off.

As such, that average can only get higher, which means Sunderland are guaranteed to break the record held by Manchester City in the 1998/99 season.

That record, held for 20 years, saw City - now competing to retain their Premier League title - attract an average home attendance of 28,261, meaning the Black Cats will beat that by more than 3,000.

Jack Ross' side could, of course, still have one more home game after Portsmouth to play. If they fail to win, or Barnsley fail to slip up in their final two games, then Sunderland will require the play-offs to achieve promotion back to the Championship, starting with a two-legged semi-final.

And while the home leg on Wearside would be likely to entice another huge crowd, that wouldn't count towards or against the overall average for the season.

Back on Boxing Day Sunderland also set a record for the highest home attendance ever in League One (just since its rebrand from the Football League Second Division) when 46,039 supporters watched Sunderland win 1-0 against Bradford.
