Sunderland are examining Adam Johnson’s club suspension after police extended the former England winger’s bail following his arrest on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
Johnson, 27, was suspended by Sunderland shortly after being arrested at his County Durham home on 2 March. After questioning he was released on police bail, which has now been extended to 23 April. In a statement Sunderland said: “Following the decision by the police today, the club will be reviewing its position and will not make any further comment at the present time.”
Johnson has missed his team’s last two games but may be involved in Saturday’s trip to West Ham United if it is decided to lift the ban. Although Dick Advocaat, the new manager, would welcome his availability, the club has wider issues to consider concerning Johnson, who has been working out at his home with a personal trainer in order to retain his fitness levels.
Durham constabulary – whose officers recently raided dressing rooms at both the Stadium of Light and the Academy of Light, where Sunderland train, issued a warning to those using social media that identifying the alleged victim is a criminal offence.
A spokesman said: “Durham constabulary is aware this investigation has resulted in considerable rumour and speculation, much of it on social media and in relation to the victim.
“This has caused distress to the victim and her family and is very unhelpful while we still have a number of actions to carry out as part of our enquiries.”
