Sunderland to face Accrington Stanley in the opening round of the Carabao Cup

Sunderland will face a trip to to Lancashire to meet League One rivals Accrington Stanley in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Black Cats have been drawn against John Coleman's side in the opening round of the competition, with the tie to be played at the Crown Ground in the week beginning August 12.

The cup date will fall between Sunderland's visit to Ipswich Town on August 10, and the home game against Portsmouth the following weekend.

It means Sunderland will visit Accrington twice in the opening six weeks of the season, with the sides also due to meet in a League One fixture on September 14.

The first round draw was made by former Liverpool and Newcastle United winger John Barnes, and ex-Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour, and took place at a supermarket in North London.

Sunderland came up against Accrington Stanley for the first time in their history last season, with the Black Cats coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at the Stadium of Light in February thanks to goals from George Honeyman and Aiden McGeady .

They then won 3-0 at the Crown Ground in early April, with McGeady, Will Grigg , and Kaz Sterling on the scoresheet.

That game in April was a rearranged fixture after the original fixture in Lancashire was abandoned in December with the scores level at 1-1 and with less than 20 minutes remaining, as torrential rain left the pitch waterlogged.
