The first season proved compelling viewing as the Black Cats struggled to come to terms with their drop into the Championship and Netflix UK have revealed when Sunderland 'Til I Die will return.
The Netflix documentary series drew in plenty of viewers at the end of 2018, with filming starting on it just over a year earlier as Sunderland AFC dropped out of the Premiership.
To begin with, the club's Championship season started with real optimism with the belief that they would bounce straight back up but reality soon hit when the team's atrocious run of form led to them struggling to pick up points, sealing their second successive relegation.
As well as focusing on the managerial fortunes of Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman and the now infamous saga of midfielder Darren Gibson, who was suspended by the club after a drink driving charge, Sunderland 'Til I Die also focused on the impact football has on the city, with cameras even going into church services as a local priest prayed for everyone at the club to turn things round.
Production company Fulwell 73 were granted behind the scenes access again as Sunderland hoped for a change in fortunes and give their loyal fans the success.
As any football fans know, Sunderland fared better in their 2018/19 League One campaign, going to Wembley twice but unfortunately being beaten both times by old adversaries Charlton Atheltic, first in the final of Checkatrade Trophy and then, more crucially in the League One Play-Off Final at the end of May.
Charlton were of course the team that broke Wearside hearts 21 years earlier back in 1998, when they denied the Black Cats a place back in the Premier League after beating them on penalties following a nail-biting and enthralling 4-4 draw in the old Wembley Stadium.
After a huge response from Sunderland supporters, many other football fans and critics, anticipation has been high for the second season of Sunderland 'Til I Die and now Netflix have confirmed when it will be available to stream.
Tweeting on Wednesday, Netflix UK tweeted: "Sunderland 'Til I Die season 2 arrives on April 1st. And no, we didn't do that on purpose."
The date hasn't gone un-noticed by Twitter users. One joked: "Without spoiling it can you tell us if they win at Wembley?" and another reacted: "I heard they play there twice. Surely they’re gonna win once."
Many Charlton fans are very much looking forward to watching. One responded: "Can’t wait to see the ending, heard it involves a team wearing red and white winning at Wembley," while another simply reacted: "Oh yes."
The first season of Sunderland 'Til I Die also landed Wearside musician The Lakes Poets a big iTunes hit with his track Shipyards, which was used in the documentary's title sequence.
