Sunderland 'til I Die - How Jack Ross advised Stewart Donald not to pay over £2m for Will Grigg

Former Sunderland boss Jack Ross told Black Cats owner Stewart Donald not to 'go daft' in their bid to sign Will Grigg.

In an extract from the upcoming second series of Netflix series 'Sunderland 'til I Die', released on April 1, Mail Online have revealed Ross advised Donald not to bid any more than the £2million bid that was originally rejected.

Ross warned Grigg was 'not worth it', before Donald indulgently signed the forward for an initial £3million, possibly rising to £4million, despite head of football Richard Hill's pleas that it 'doesn't make financial sense'.

The Northern Ireland international was signed to score the goals to lead Sunderland to promotion after selling top scorer Josh Maja to Bordeaux.

But he scored just four goals in 20 League One games as Sunderland missed out on promotion and he has just one league goal from 20 appearances this term.

The 28-year-old is now the Black Cats' third choice forward behind Kyle Lafferty and Charlie Wyke.

Meanwhile, the report also describes the opening scene of the new series as 'The Office meets The Wolf of Wall Street', while former executive director Charlie Methven is described as 'a gentrified Del Boy, often acts like David Brent and has the furious, unashamed ambition of Gordon Gekko', who instructed the stadium DJ to make the music before kick-off more like ‘a massive rave, a bit Ibiza’.

It also details the full scale of the financial problems Donald and Methven faced when they first took over the club, as well as insight into the days leading up to Maja's sale.
