Sunderland team news vs Southend: Jack Ross makes four changes as Hume starts

Denver Hume was among the starters for Sunderland's final game of the regular season at Southend.

The Black Cats wrap up the season at Roots Hall knowing victory will gave them the best chance of a favourable tie in the play-offs, as they look to get over the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion.

Jack Ross made four changes to the side that started the midweek defeat at Fleetwood Town.

Charlie Wyke returned from injury to partner Will Grigg up front, with Lewis Morgan dropping to the bench to enable the switch to 4-4-2.

Adam Matthews came into the side at right-back at the expense of Luke O'Nien, with Hume preferred to Bryan Oviedo at left-back.

And Grant Leadbitter made his first start for three weeks, replacing Lee Cattermole in central midfield.

Southend United boss Kevin Bond made three changes to the team that began last weekend's defeat at Rochdale.
He brought in Sam Hart, Dru Yearwood, and Stephen McLaughlin, in place of Stephen Hendrie, Luke Hyam, and Harry Bunn.

Here's the Sunderland team in full:

Starting XI: McLaughlin, Matthews, Flanagan, Ozturk, Hume, Leadbitter, Power, Gooch, Maguire, Grigg, Wyke

Subs: Ruiter, Dunne, Oviedo, McGeouch, O’Nien, Connelly, Sterling
