Sunderland team news vs Fleetwood: Chris Maguire makes first start since injury

There were three changes to Sunderland's starting line-up at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening, with Chris Maguire starting for the first time since his leg injury back in February.

Jack Ross had said on the eve of the game that he would be forced into making changes to the side that drew against Portsmouth at the weekend, with several players carrying minor knocks.

And he brought Lynden Gooch, Maguire and Will Grigg into the starting XI in place of Aiden McGeady, George Honeyman, and Charlie Wyke.

Captain Honeyman was named on the bench but McGeady - nursing a foot injury for a number of weeks now - and Wyke were out of the squad altogether.

Maguire made his first start since fracturing his fibula back in February. Having come through 30 minutes from the bench on Saturday against Portsmouth, Ross deemed him fit to start the penultimate game of the regular season.

Luke O'Nien went off late in the game against Pompey but recovered in time to start at Highbury Stadium.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton made one change to the side that drew at home to Bristol Rovers.
Top scorer Ched Evans missed out through injury, with his place taken by Paddy Madden.

Sunderland XI: McLaughlin, O’Nien, Flanagan, Ozturk, Oviedo, Cattermole, Power, Gooch, Maguire, Morgan, Grigg

Subs: Ruiter, Dunne, Hume, Honeyman, Leadbitter, Matthews, Sterling
