Sunderland could rekindle their interest in striker Lawrence Shankland, after the goal sensation confirmed he was leaving Ayr United this summer.
The Black Cats have long been credited with an interest in frontman, who scored a remarkable 34 goals in the Scottish Championship this season.
But there will be plenty of competition for the 23-year-old, with Swansea already having a big turned down in the January window.
Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers are also believed to have an interest in the Scotland Under-21 international, but he recently revealed that football - not financial - factors would be a key influence when deciding his future.
Tweeting on his decision to leave the Honest Men, Shankland posted: "Most enjoyable two seasons of my career so far and a time I’ll definitely not forget.
“Thanks to all my team-mates and the staff and wish everyone at @AyrUnitedFC all the best for the future.”
Jack Ross worked with Shankland during a loan spell at St Mirren, while he was reported to gave turned down a move to Belgian second-tier side Saint Gilloise.
Speaking earlier this season, Shankland said: “People were doubting me a wee bit at the start of the season because I’d been in the Championship but not done that great.
“It’s been good to show I can play at this level and if I get the chance to play in the Premiership or wherever then I will look forward to it.
“It’s honestly not about the money for me. I want to keep improving and the money will come if you do well enough.
“I want to go somewhere where I can go and show people what I can do.”
