Sunderland striker Will Grigg turns down loan move to Salford City

Sunderland striker Will Grigg has reportedly turned down a loan move to League Two side Salford City.

The Northern Ireland forward's future remains uncertain following the arrival of international teammate Kyle Lafferty to the Black Cats.

Salford - who are currently 12th in League Two -have been keen to take him to the Peninsula Stadium.

However, it is understood that the 28-year-old does not want to drop another division, while Sunderland are believed to be reluctant to sell to a League One rival with Blackpool manager Simon Grayson also targeting him.

Grigg left Wigan for Sunderland a year ago in a £4m deal, a record for a transfer involving a League One club.

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson said before tonight's game away at Tranmere: "Will and I have had a good chat this week and if nothing happens, he is happy to stay here and fight for his place and make a contribution.

“If something comes up and we feel we can get somebody else in, we’ll also look at that."

Grigg is currently unavailable for selection due to a virus, but has missed the last two matchday squads when available.

He has featured 19 times this season in the League for the Wearside club netting once against tonight's opponents Tranmere Rovers in a 5-0 rout at the Stadium of Light in October.
