Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke watched by CSKA Moscow scouts with contract running out

Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke was watched by scouts from Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow last week, according to reports.

The Black Cats striker has been in superb form this season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions and playing a key part in the Wearsiders' League One promotion push.

However, the 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and his prolific record in front of goal over the past seven months has alerted a number of clubs.

Following on from reports that Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock could be interested in taking him back to Teesside, where he started his career as an academy prospect, the Daily Mail now report that scouts from Moscow were in attendance for Sunderland's 1-1 draw at Peterborough on Easter Monday.

It is believed they were watching both Wyke and Posh striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, who has also been in excellent goalscoring form.

Neither were on target on the day, and indeed Wyke has only scored once in Sunderland's last seven games, following a run of nine goals in the previous eight.

Wyke's future - like many at Sunderland - could depend on which division the Black Cats are playing in next season, with interest from Championship clubs likely to come in the summer should Lee Johnson and Co fail to get over the line.

The Wearsiders remain one of the favourites to clinch promotion despite Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Charlton, and would be heavily backed to come through the play-offs should they miss out on an automatic promotion place.

Sunderland play one of their games in hand on Tuesday night when they travel to strugglers Wigan for a 6pm kick-off.
