Sunderland still looking to add 'one or two' more players before the transfer deadline

Sunderland are aiming to add 'one or two' more players before Tuesday's transfer deadline - but only if they are of the right quality.

The Black Cats have already signed seven players this summer, but boss Lee Johnson still wants to bring in players to strengthen key positions.

While Sunderland will be able to sign free agents outside the window, any transfers or loans must be completed before Tuesday's 11pm cut-off.

"We've done some good business in the last few weeks," said assistant head coach Jamie McAllister, following Sunderland's 3-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers yesterday.

"It was a slow window, as it has been for most clubs - there have only been one or two that did a lot of business early.

"We've been patient and waited for the right quality to come along, and if we can add one or two more before the window closes then that would be great, but they have to be the right players and the right fit for the club."

Sunderland have brought in several young players so far, with 17-year-old Callum Doyle joining on loan from Manchester City, 21-year-old Frederik Alves on loan from West Ham, 20-year-old Niall Huggins arriving from Leeds, and 19-year-old Dennis Cirkin joining from Spurs.

They have been integrated into the side alongside the core of senior players at the club, and McAllister picked out the way that Northern Ireland international Tom Flanagan has helped Doyle, as the duo have developed a centre-back pairing in the early weeks of the season.

"Flanno [Flanagan] has been different class," he said. "He had a great pre-season and he has stepped up and shown his leadership qualities.

"He's like a father-figure to Callum Doyle, constantly talking to him, organising, and helping him in games and in training.

"When we came in, Flanno was in great form but then he got injured and just dipped a bit when he came back.

"But he has been very good this season and we rate him very highly."
